My own research after getting facinated by Jeroen Lutters research
Art education is very important according to Gert Biesta, who is an educator, he gives a new pedagogical impulse to educators in mainly Europe. In the book a Beautiful Risk of Education, Gert Biesta, states that there are three major tasks for education/educators. First is the qualification of children. This is providing knowledge, skills and understanding to allow them to “do something”.
Second is socialization, meaning that through education one is initiated in traditions, culture and ways of thinking and acting, in other words, cultural, social and civic education. Last is subjectification, this is in contrast to the previous, the development of one self as a unique individual. Education should always encompass (in every subject or major) these three domains. So for every subject or major, educators should thoroughly investigate how to incorporate these three domains. The current curriculum at schools is mainly focused on math and language skills, in these subjects it is hard to include the three domains. In order to fully embed these three domains, Biesta recommends adding art, culture, heritage, citizenship and philosophy. These subjects cultivate the relation between an individual towards himself, others and the world. (Biesta 2010-2013)
Karakelle found that creative drama processes have the following effects on students: it triggers curiosity by increasing the tolerance for uncertainty. Performances can be easily revised and regulated by allowing individuals to perform repeatedly in a safe environment. Drama often is practiced within a group, which helps to increase variety in the range of ideas and responses of the individual in the group. This study demonstrated that drama is an effective vehicle to encourage the production of multiple and different responses increasing the ability in fluent and flexible thinking. (Karakalle. S. 2009)
I agree with the statement from Biesta that there should be more art – or art-related subjects in schools. During my work, I often got the question how to combine the more common subjects with the art ones. Especially drama; since it requires a different setting. The didactics of art education require a different set of rules and regulations. Dr. Jeroen Lutters states that art didactics requires a different sort of teacher, a different learning environment, a different curriculum and a different learning method compared to more classical forms of education. In art education the emphasis should be on the process and not on the solution for a problem. As an art educator it is pivotal to be able to switch between different forms of didactics to create as many as possible unique learning experiences for every individual student. This can be achieved by keeping in mind that the learning experience should be unique, following the student’s own imagination. This entails that there is no right or wrong in outcome, since the focus is on the learning process of the individual and not on the general curriculum.(ref) Dr. Jeroen Lutters developed a novel learning method, Art Based Learning. This states that art is a way of thinking, it entails that the beholder of a piece of art links the feelings that it evokes to the social, cultural and historical context of the piece of art. By placing your own emotions in this perspective and by developing a train of thought one comes to new insights, which can be used to develop new creations; new thoughts and art. (Lutters. J 2013 - 2015)
